In like a lion, out like a lamb has been a well-known proverb equated with the seasons changing in the month of March. 2021 is officially here and just like the proverb it has roared already, but enough about 2021…for now.
Let’s reflect back on the past year, shall we? The year that the vast majority – if not all of us — wished never happened. I used the first week of 2021 to catch my breath and decompress from all the unwarranted stress and agony that the “year that shall remain nameless” bestowed upon us like a white elephant gift. If I had to rate the past year on a scale of one to ten it would be a solid four; the year wasn’t horrible but it was far from great.
Here are 3 words I would use to describe 2020:
DEFIANT
The disparities between race in this country was on full display during the entire summer. Nonstop, nonviolent and peaceful protesting took place locally, nationally and globally. It was quite the sight to see and people held their stance pretty firm on challenging what it means to be black in America as well as forcing their counterparts to understand the power that they are afforded with their white privilege.
INTROSPECTIVE
People, including myself, being forced to “shelter-in-place” and work from home along with kids having to attend school from home via computer due to a pandemic has stirred certain emotions within us, whether good or bad. Some of us have taken this peculiar situation to learn about ourselves, to re-evaluate our relationships and to figure out our place in this world.
TRAGIC
Not only were black folks losing their lives from the hands of police brutality and from guns in the hands of randoms; a pandemic was allowed to run rampant claiming the lives of 300,000 plus people in the U.S. alone. We also lost some pretty prolific figures that impacted a lot of lives with their humanity such as: Chadwick Boseman, Kobe Bryant (along with his daughter Gianna), Ruth Bader Ginsburg and countless others.
2020 wasn’t completely convoluted with sorrow and disappointment. There were some personal highlights that should not go unnoticed: I started journaling on a consistent basis, which is helping me to delve into myself on a much deeper level. I started a body transformation regimen where I lost over 30lbs; that consisted more of changing what I ate, when I ate it and how I ate it with no form of exercise included. I also fleshed out some creative projects and ventures I would like to further pursue in 2021 (one of them being a website presenting a directory of podcasts for, by and about women called Chick Chat Podcast Directory). My goal is to continue on a more creative path and try to incorporate creativity into my daily life a whole lot more.
All in all, 2020 was a masterclass on everything that has always been wrong with America, but it also forced people to put down their rose-colored glasses and see the world, the people around them as well as themselves with much more clarity.
