GramMixxed: On The First Day Of Christmashanukwanzakah…

4 mins read

Not even the meanest Scrooge or the rudest Grinch can remain a bah humbugger the closer it gets to the holiday festivities. The ice cap your heart is encased in slowly begins to melt away at the first sound of a jingle bell. There is nothing like decking the halls and roasting chestnuts while a slew of Christmas tunes dance in your head like sugarplum fairies. Christmas music definitely makes the season bright with all its yuletide and ho-ho-holiday cheer. So, whether you need music while you work diligently on your latest creative project to complete the year is officially up or just something to groove to while you decorate the tree, here’s a playlist to get you started:

01. The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas to You), O Holy Night & The First Noel || Nat King Cole || 1961
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwacxSnc4tI
Did you honestly think I could pick just ONE Nat King Cole Christmas song?!?!? Nat King Cole is the voice of Christmas as far as I am concerned.

02. My Favorite Things || Diana Ross & The Supremes || 1965
I love, love, love, love, love this version of My Favorite Things (#sorrynotsorry Julie Andrews). I will randomly listen to this song even when it’s not Christmas.

03. Christmas Time Is Here (instrumental version) || Vince Guaraldi Trio || 2012
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvI_FNrczzQ
I’m a sucker for a orchestral or symphonic arrangement and this version gets me every time. I like the vocal version too, but this is the ONE for me right here.

04. Ring Christmas Bells || Ray Conniff || 1962
This rendition is hauntingly beautiful from the instrumentation to the infinite canon style of singing that would have been a perfect fit in A Nightmare Before Christmas.

05. Winter Wonderland || Ella Fitzgerald || 1960
I have never paid much attention to Ella, but hearing her version pop up on LOVE 105.7 forced me to take notice and do some digging…

06. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas || John Legend feat. Esperanza Spaulding || 2018
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uo5OpGkadcw
Talk about an audible match made in music heaven! I will admit that upon hearing this song I immediately thought the female vocalist was Chrisette Michelle (and NO, I have not canceled her like everyone else has/did), but all this time it was Esperanza. Their voices meld ever so harmoniously together. I could listen to an entire joint album of just John and Esperanza vibing together in all their jazziness.

07. It’s The Most Wonderful Time || Andy Williams || 1963
Classic 1950’s, 1960’s vocal tone. A tone I must adore when it comes to Christmas music seeing as though the majority of the songs I chose are from that era.

Honorable Mention:
Baby, It’s Cold Outside
|| Brett Eldredge feat. Meghan Trainor || 2016
Before this song became controversial due to it’s misogynistic lyrics I really liked it and forgive me, but I still do (there I said it). This pairing of Brett (who I never knew of until this song) and Meghan is music to my ears (so to speak) and I thoroughly enjoy listening to this song.
