The Woman Who Would Be King: Regina King

2 mins read

My first introduction to Regina King was back in the very late 80s on the TV sitcom 227 where she played the teenaged Brenda Jenkins who dated the nosy neighbor’s grandson Calvin. From there she broke into film with Boyz ‘n the Hood as the brash talking Shalika from around the way. Since then, she’s portrayed an array of characters that all managed to steal the show from all the other actors like:

The no-nonsense best friend of Janet Jackson teetering on the edge of alcoholism in Poetic Justice.

to

Assisting her pro footballer husband in asserting Tom Cruise’s character to show them “THE (sch)MONEY!” in Jerry Maguire.

to

The fed-up wife opposite Laz Alonzo who finds an alternative use for baby oil after a shower in This Christmas.

to

Pulling double voice-over duty as 2 brothers in an iconic animated show called The Boondocks

to

Carrying an entire TV series on her back (did i say that out loud) while fighting off Nazis as the masked vigilante superheroSister Night in the Watchmen

Regina King has made an enormous impact on the TV/Film industry with not only her acting but her directing as well. Her list of accolades are extensive and her award acceptance speeches are just as empowering and diverse as the roles she plays. I love the path and artistic choices that Regina has taken and continues to take (plus she resembles a cousin of mine which is a bonus). I wish her continued success in the business.
